A rambunctious version of Montepulciano with a vibrant purple colour, all fresh berries and spice, aided and abetted by stimulating acidity. Grown on the vast expanses of Oz's Riverlands Region (think San Joaquin Valley without the good soil).
Punk's not dead, man. It lives on in the mind of Con-Greg Grigoriou in South Australia's Riverland Region. It's a region where massive tracts of vineyards have been planted to slake the thirst for corporate, race-to-the-bottom-shelf wines intended for sale in UK supermarket chains. The Riverlands are hot and dry, and there's a reason that the River Murray is better known as a source for great sea salt than it is for great wine. Delinquente is leading the change against the low expectations and is making a difference.
Con-Greg's father runs one of these big-as-a-state vineyards but being a rebellious youth, he decided that Riverland wines didn't have to be insipid, but sould be sipped, pounded and maybe even guzzled and still providing sensory stimulation and even no small amount of intellectual pleasure. He sources organically farmed grapes of Southern Italian grape origin and uses minimally intrusive winemaking. They're not officially natural wines, but close enough to pass just about any test you may want to put it to (and after the first glass you won't care anyway). Most importantly, they taste good and accompany food just fine.
The labels are designed by a Melbourne artist named Ankles (of course they are).
